Celebrate Fall! Fabulous Fall Flowers for the Season

by Rachael Priest on October 5, 2011

For many, there is no time of year that is more exciting than the onset of fall. The fresh crispness in the air combined with the traditional festivals and the vibrant, changing colors as nature prepares itself for the winter months ahead is akin to paradise on Earth. What does that mean for your flowers? A lot!

Flowers for Fall

When you are considering your options for fall flowers, you’ll no doubt think in colors of goldenrod, orange, burgundy, amber, purple, and red. Knowing which flowers are available in these colors, however, can be a bit challenging. Lilies, hypericum, also known as St. John’s Wort, and sunflowers are excellent choices for a traditional fall arrangement, along with some of the following:

  • Roses: Roses are available in strikingly brilliant colors perfect for autumn. The deep red is popular all year long, while more specialized colors are excellent in the fall. Ask your florist about orange roses, yellow roses, and even brown roses to celebrate the season. Don’t worry…the brown roses are quite beautiful and look just as healthy as any other color!
  • Chrysanthemums: This is the quintessential fall flower. It just isn’t quite autumn without them. You can have your florist arrange a variety of colored mums in a vase or basket, or order the entire bush to plant in your yard or garden.
  • Gerbera Daisies: While Gerbera daisies are not strictly a fall flower, the vibrancy of their colors makes them ideally suited for fall flower arrangements. Several fall colors are available, so ask your florist about the options.

The Finishing Touch

Creating a unique fall flower arrangement is as simple as the accessories you put with it. All sorts of items can be added to give your fall flowers flair: a stalk or two of wheat, a bit of eucalyptus, a tiny pumpkin, or even a miniature scarecrow gives a fall arrangement personality. Request a pretty autumn ribbon for the perfect final touch.

Alternatives to Fall Flowers

If you are looking for fall gifts but are unsure if the recipient will enjoy a flower arrangement, there are still plenty of things you can do. Try any of the following:

  • Apple Basket: Autumn is apple season, after all, so what better way to celebrate than a colorful fruit basket full of apples? Red and green apples serve as your base, and bananas and grapes can be added for a bit more color. Finish it off with a small amount of chocolate and silk fall leaves, and you have a beautiful alternative to flowers that they can enjoy looking at and eating.
  • Gift Baskets: If fruit isn’t an option, check out your local florist for unique gift ideas. Most shops carry an assortment of gifts that you can arrange in a basket or give individually. Some suggestions are scented soaps, coffee mugs, key chains, and personalized bookmarks.
  • Gift Certificates: This is a one-size-fits-all option that anyone can enjoy. Just choose your gift amount and let the recipient choose their own fall flowers or gifts.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit, but other than that, this is wonderful blog. A great read. I will definitely be back.
