October: An Excellent Month for Flowers

by Rachael Priest on October 18, 2011

October is a great month for flowers, and for many reasons. It’s a busy month full of events and holidays, but it’s also the peak of the fall flowers season. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

  1. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer, like all cancers, can be a devastating disease for the women—and men!—who are diagnosed with it. Fortunately, most forms of breast cancer are very treatable with high remission rates if they are caught early. Awareness is the key, and what better way to remind someone to get their breast cancer screening than by sending pink flowers? A few to choose from include roses, carnations, alstroemeria, gerbera daisies, mini carnations, lisianthus, lilies, and snapdragons. Think pink…it works!

  1. The Lesser Known Dates of October

Sweetest Day on the 15th, Boss’s Day on the 16th, and Mother-in-Law Day on the 23rd all occur in October. While they may not be as well known as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, they are opportunities for you to recognize the people in your life that often don’t get the widespread recognition they deserve. Society may like to pick on mothers-in-law, but remember that without her you would not have your spouse! Why not send her a beautiful fall flower arrangement this month to show her how much she means to you?

  1. Halloween

We’d be remiss to talk about October and not mention Halloween! Whether you like to go for the ghost and goblin theme or prefer to keep things a bit more friendly, there are many things you can do with flowers for this holiday. For the spooky theme, consider an arrangement or wreath made of orange and black silks with a touch of spider web—or ask your florist if they can tint some fresh flowers black and use orange gerbera daisies to give that color pop. For the friendly approach, use small scarecrows, pumpkins, and gourds in your fall arrangements. Don’t forget the wheat!

  1. The Peak of the Season

With festivals, fairs, and fiery foliage, October seems as though it was created for flowers! The vibrant variety of colors means you don’t have to have a reason to order flowers other than for the sheer enjoyment of them. Place a colorful centerpiece on your dining room table, set bright fall flower budvases around your living room, or pick up a mixed bouquet of autumnal bliss to share with your friends or family.

Although the end of October is approaching, there is still time to take advantage of many of the wonderful floral opportunities it provides. It won’t come around again for another year, so be sure you grab your fall flowers soon.
