November Flowers, Facts, and More

by Rachael Priest on November 4, 2011

When most people think of the month of November, Thanksgiving stands out prominently in the mind. However, this mid-fall month contains so much more than just one holiday. From festivities to brightly colored flowers, and from health awareness to being kind to one another, November doesn’t have to be just the month before Christmas.

November’s Flower

We’ve discussed our favorite fall flower, the chrysanthemum, previously, so it’s no small surprise that November would claim this autumnal beauty as her flower. This is the perfect time of the year to add mums to your landscaping design, place a few potted mums around your entryway, or ask your local florist to arrange a bright and beautiful fresh arrangement from mums for yourself or for your friends or family with November birthdays.

November’s Holidays and Events

Obviously, there is Thanksgiving, on the 24th of November this year, which is a much beloved and looked forward to holiday for everyone. Other dates of note in November include:

  • Daylight Savings Time ends on November 6. Time to reclaim that lost hour of sleep!
  • Veteran’s Day on November 11. Be sure to thank a veteran for your freedom!
  • Buds ‘n Bows Flower Shop’s annual open house is in November. This year it’s on November 12th so mark your calendar!
  • World Kindness Day on November 13. Strive to do something kind for someone this day. Flowers are an excellent idea!
  • Election Day is always the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
  • National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day is November 14, just in time for preparation for Thanksgiving leftovers!
  • November 15 is America Recycles Day. Increase your recycling efforts, get started in recycling, or use the day to let others know how rewarding this practice can be.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Last month we all strove to increase the awareness of breast cancer, which is a noble and very much needed effort. Did you know, however, that according to the CDC, diabetes claims the lives of more people every year than breast cancer and AIDS combined? There is not one of us that doesn’t know—or live with—someone who struggles with diabetes, and chances are we know a great deal more than just one person with it. Perhaps you yourself struggle with this life-altering condition. November is the time to increase awareness about diabetes, support those who live with it, and push for greater education and research efforts to reduce and eliminate its occurrence.

Getting the Most Out of November

When you consider all of this, it’s easy to see how there is much more to November than meets the eye. There is plenty to celebrate as fall begins to fade into winter and the holiday festivities begin in earnest. Why not select one or more of the lesser known dates in November to create a new tradition, do something wonderful for someone else, and bring more fulfillment to your life? Flowers are always an excellent option any time of the year, are sugar-free, and can put a smile on a person’s face.

If you are looking for a local florist who can put together your perfect “lesser known November” flower ensemble, come see us at Buds ‘n Bows Flower Shop in Crawford, Ga.
