2011: Reflections of a Florist

by Paula Wagnon on December 29, 2011

The last week of the year is unlike any other. It both begins and ends with a holiday. Christmas is past, dinners have been enjoyed, stockings have been emptied, and gifts have been given. Packages have all been opened and relatives have visited and been visited. Just ahead is the promise of hope for a new beginning with the birth of a brand new year.

It is during this magical time of transition from one year to the next that we take some time to reflect on the past years experiences. The challenges we faced in 2011 and how we overcame those challenges, as well as the many blessings of the past year, have all come together to build character into our personalities.

As I reflect on 2011, I discover how important flowers have been in the events of my life during the past year. The loss of a loved one is never easy; I’ve experienced three losses in my own family this year. But somehow there is comfort drawn from a spray of flowers sent by a caring friend. This gesture of love and kindness speaks volumes at a time when there are no words than can adequately convey the message of sympathy in our heart.

In moments of celebration such as birthday parties, the birth of a new baby, graduations, and anniversaries, flowers can bring even more pleasure as they brighten each corner they are placed in. It is hard to imagine these life events without so much as one single bloom perched silently, but magnificently, in close proximity: nature’s perfect reflection of the complexity of human emotions.

Looking back on 2011, we recognize that it has been quite a challenging year for many people. Economic difficulties have caused us to reach deep within ourselves to discover creative ways to stretch our finances. Gift ideas have reached new levels as we search for just the right item on a sometimes limited supply of funds. And yet, these challenges have brought about the best in each of us as we have not only faced them, but conquered each one successfully.

As we come to the final days of 2011, we would like to thank each of you for following our blog these past few months.
